Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd took a major step forward in its repair of the NRU reactor at Chalk River last week. In its 57th status update on the NRU repairs, AECL announced that crews had completed the “final and most challenging weld repair” to the reactor vessel. Company spokesman Dale Coffin said completing the examination of the weld and analysing those results could take another week but “it looks promising right now.”

“We've all got our fingers crossed. We're cautiously optimistic we'll be moving on into the (reactor) start-up phase,” he said.

NRU was shut down just over a year ago after a small heavy water leak was discovered. The leak was later traced to an area of corrosion near the base of the reactor vessel.
