AECL Provides Update on NRU Activities
Tuesday, June 2, 2010
The following information bulletin is in accordance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL). AECL reports that ninety-eight per cent of the NRU weld repairs are now complete.
During the most recent round of non-destructive examination (NDE) a single imperfection in the final repair was identified. A thorough assessment of the area in question has been completed and steps are underway to make the necessary finishing repair and complete the follow-up NDE.
Activities related to the start-up phase of the NRU Return-to-Service project are ongoing in parallel to repair activities. Part of the Return-to-Service project’s plan includes reactivating the NRU’s auxiliary operating systems. To date, 21 of the 35 NRU systems have been placed in service.
More information on the return to service of the NRU is available at NRUCanada.ca. ****To continue this article, please continue to the following link http://www.aecl.ca |
"Final Weld" Complete on NRU
Wednesday, June 2, 2010 by Terry Myers
Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd took a major step forward in its repair of the NRU reactor at Chalk River last week. In its 57th status update on the NRU repairs, AECL announced that crews had completed the “final and most challenging weld repair” to the reactor vessel. Company spokesman Dale Coffin said completing the examination of the weld and analysing those results could take another week but “it looks promising right now.” “We've all got our fingers crossed. We're cautiously optimistic we'll be moving on into the (reactor) start-up phase,” he said. NRU was shut down just over a year ago after a small heavy water leak was discovered. The leak was later traced to an area of corrosion near the base of the reactor vessel. ****To continue this article, please continue to the following link http://www.magma.ca |
